Don’t cut too short
Routine lawn mowing plays a significant role in the health of your lawn from the promotion of growth and discouragement of weeds and pests to the protection of soil from drying out. The good health of your lawn can be compromised however if you cut it too short and all your hard work and investment in preparation and maintenance could be undone with one sweep of a mower.
Experts agree that you should not cut more than 1/3 of the grass at a time and use as sharp a blade as you can. If grass is long or very thick a good tip is to cut it higher first, then cut it lower a few days later. Generally, the recommended length depends on the variety of grass and the purpose of your lawn but a rule of thumb is to keep at 3 - 5-7.5cm and never cut lower than 1cm. (some variation in literature here… depends on grass type)
There are several disadvantages to cutting grass too short:
- Grass can be weakened if you cut low to the ground
- Your lawn can be ‘scalped’ in higher laying areas and bumps, resulting in bare patches
- Weed invasion is more likely with a too-short lawn
